LAS Week

Academically diverse and culturally rich, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the heart of learning and discovery at Iowa State!

We reach all students at ISU and also offer more than 50 majors, minors, certificates and academic programs.

LAS Week is an event to celebrate the college’s diverse academic areas in the physical and life sciences, math and computational sciences, communications, arts and humanities, and social sciences.

LAS Week: March 23 – 27, 2026 Schedule of Events

7:30am: LAS Week Wellness Run/Walk
Catt Hall steps (1K and 5K routes starting point)

All LAS runners, joggers, and walkers are welcome to join department chairs for this casual, non-competitive morning run/walk. A 5K route around campus will be shared at the meet-up location in front of Catt Hall for runners, and a 1K route will be provided for walkers. All paces welcome!

8:00am – 10:00am: Kickoff Breakfast

Join the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as we officially begin LAS Week 2026 with our annual Kickoff Breakfast. This event is open to all LAS students and is a great opportunity to get some food, mingle with members of the LAS community, and get excited for a week full of events. College units will be in attendance offering resources.

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication is hosting two special LAS Week editions of Press Paws! This week’s featured pup is Yona, the beloved dog of Greenlee professor Catherine Huggins!

2:30pm – 3:30pm: German Kaffeeklatsch

Enjoy a special Viennese Coffee House experience this LAS Week hosted by the German Program.

All Week Long: Chinese Calligraphy Exhibit

History will come alive as teams of history students, coached by a professor, will compete to put on the most entertaining reenactments from human history!

6:00pm: Spring 2026 LAS Dean’s Distinguished Lecture
Durham Great Hall, Memorial Union

Bill Gallus, Distinguished Professor in the Department of the Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate, was selected by Dean Benjamin Withers to deliver the Spring 2026 LAS Dean’s Distinguished Lecture. The lecture, “Iowa’s Surprising 2020 Derecho: What have Meteorologists Learned?” will be presented in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union and will also be available virtually.

6:00pm – 7:30pm: Chinese Calligraphy Workshop

Learn the history and art of Chinese calligraphy and try it out yourself!

8:30am – 10:00am: LAS Student Success is Sweet!

Faculty and staff associated with LAS Career Services, LAS Academic Advising, LAS Study Abroad, STEM Scholars, Bold Learning Community, and Graduation+ will be handing out donuts and will be ready to share about the many resources in LAS to help you succeed.

9:00am – 11:00am: Donuts and the Declaration

The event features a community reading of the Declaration of Independence, along with brief reflections on its role in America’s founding. Enjoy a donut and, perhaps, hear the Declaration read aloud for the first time.

10:00am – 12:00pm: Blind Date with a Book

Fall head over heels for the English Department at Blind Date with a Book, where all students can take home prizes, baked goods, and a literary adventure to unwrap. How’s that for a meet cute?
